You learn something new everyday…

19 July 2010

especially if you have lots of random stuff in your google reader like I do. Case and point this article.  The Indian Rupee recently obtained it’s own official symbol.  The linked article gives a brief explanation of the origins of the symbol and how it was chosen.

High Suicide Rate in India

7 May 2010

One of the things that Vernon and I noticed during our time in India was the prevalence of suicide.  It seemed like almost every building that had a scenic view of the city or access to a rooftop had been closed to the public because someone had used it to commit suicide.

A couple of days ago I ran across an article in the New York Times discussing this very topic.  It cites various examples to show the many reasons proposed for the troubling epidemic. Although I wouldn’t describe the story as graphic it does give a detailed account of each of the instances that it references so read at your discretion.

Regardless of whether or not you read the article I hope that you will continue to join us in prayer for India and how God would have His Voice participate in the establishing of His Kingdom there.

India- Day 2

1 April 2010

We went to one of the largest train stations in all of India today. It was wild to hear how each of the train platforms are run by a different gang. The violence that happens at this train station by these kids is incredible. We had the chance to meet some of these kids and we were also rocked by some terrible stories. In the video you will see some kids singing. They are singing songs to Jesus. They are also high from glue.
We saw where many of the girls and boys sleep and also some of the places where the girls, as young as ten, are raped on a repeated basis. If no girls are around some of the older boys will then rape the younger boys. It is devastating.

Nabin and his wife Matilda are two people who are doing something about this intense situation. They have opened their home to seven boys. The goal is to get them out of the train station, disciple them in Jesus, and also give them an education. Nabin does this without a consistent budget and prays to God for provision every day. The boys at the end of the video are the ones who live in Nabin and Matilda’s home.

Although the devastation can be so difficult it was a great encouragement to be around such strong people as Nabin and Matilda. One of the things that Nabin told us was that when heavy persecution hit his village last year one of his nieces was raped and then set on fire! She is still alive. In the face of such personal difficulty I pray that you would be encouraged by the sacrificial living of Nabin and Matilda. They offer the worldwide church great hope and reason to rejoice.

Day 1 Update and Prayer Requests

31 March 2010

Here is a brief video update from Vernon on our first day in India.

Also, if you would pray for our meetings tomorrow we would really appreciate it.  We will be spending time with an individual who rescues children who have been injured and forced to beg for food and money at a local railway station that over 1 million commuters a day pass through.  Lastly, please pray for super-natural strength, as we haven’t slept in awhile, and open doors.

Love you all

Justin
